AVENIR successfully completes 2nd round of azithromycin distribution in Niger

AVENIR Phase II implementation: Campaign expansion

Following the launch of Phase II of the AVENIR project in Dosso, Tahoua and Maradi, the second round of azithromycin distribution took place between 10 and 14 February 2025 in these three regions, with Zinder also included in the programme between 11 and 15 February 2025.

Seamless implementation was ensured thanks to in-depth training for field teams and the provision of all necessary logistical support prior to deployments. Supervision teams were also mobilised to monitor field activities, oversee drug distribution, and resolve any logistical challenges in real time.

Progress and community engagement

Dosso

All eight districts in the Dosso region were successfully covered by the campaign, which began in Dioundou on 10 February. Supervision teams, comprising regional health officials, district officers, integrated health centre (CSI) representatives, and community leaders ensured that campaign objectives were met. A post-distribution evaluation was conducted on 16 February to assess the overall effectiveness and impact of the initiative.

Tahoua & Maradi

In the Tahoua and Maradi regions, particular attention was paid to campaign visibility, ensuring that all awareness-raising materials were properly displayed. Supervision efforts focused on rigorous monitoring of drug distribution and documentation of any side effects. The campaign concluded with an official presentation of the results on 16 February in Bouza, attended by key stakeholders, including local health authorities and representatives of the AVENIR project.

Zinder participates in the programme for the first time

A key milestone in this phase was Zinder’s participation in the campaign for the first time. Officially launched on 11 February 2025 at the Koleram Integrated Health Centre (Mirriah district), the campaign was held under the patronage of the Governor of Zinder.

The launch event brought together government representatives, health professionals and community leaders, signalling a firm commitment to reducing child mortality.

The event kicked off with some speeches, an awareness-raising performance, and the symbolic administration of first doses, reaffirming the project’s mission. The AVENIR project was also able to make a financial contribution of 500,000 CFA to support the purchase of medical supplies for local health centres.

Success in Matameye

The AVENIR II campaign in the Matameye district exceeded expectations, achieving a coverage rate of over 100%. Acceptance of the treatment by parents was particularly high and, despite reports of minor side effects, participation remained strong.

The AVENIR II team extends grateful thanks to its implementing partners:
